CAST in the News: CAST STEM Students Take Flight
This summer, six CAST STEM students took their drone skills beyond the classroom, spending 10 weeks as drone pilot interns mapping parks and public infrastructure across San Antonio’s Southwest Side. Their work combined drone operations and 3D mapping with a larger public-health effort examining walkability, accessibility, safety, and other factors that shape quality of life in the community.
San Antonio Report education reporter Xochilt Garcia followed the students into the field at Pearsall Park, capturing how the internship challenged them to apply technical skills, solve problems as a team, gather community input, and present their findings to local leaders. The project brought together CAST STEM with the Dee Howard Foundation and the Center for Health Empowerment in South Texas (CHEST), with additional support from community and workforce partners.
